Odisha Urban Local Bodies

The state of Odisha has 114 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and almost all of them now have their own Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs). These FSTPs are working very well in treating Faecal Sludge but there is no definite plan for disposing the dried faecal sludge coming out of the FSTP. This problem has been considered as an opportunity by FSMC and it was suggested to the ULBs that FSMC can provide them with a solution to this problem through co-composting the faecal sludge with green waste. Many ULBs were contacted but Dhenkanal Municipality agreed at once and started a pilot project with FSMC where the company will provide technical and handholding support to the municipality. FSMC also provides product development and product marketing services to the ULBs. An MoU has been signed with the Dhenkanal Municipality for the same. the Dhenkanal partnership has resulted in FSMC getting letters from 8 more ULBs to start co-composting work on a pilot basis.

Waste

WASTE is a 35-year-old international organisation specialising in three key areas:

(i) sanitation and faecal sludge management,

(ii) solid waste management, including plastics recycling, and

(iii)innovative financing, in low- and middle-income countries. WASTE envisions a world in which all
people live in a clean environment with access to appropriate and sustainable sanitation and waste services that they use, and can afford, and that these services are based on sustainable resource use. WASTE mission is to initiate, strengthen and scale waste management solutions which help urban communities to become healthier, contribute to greater social inclusion and protect the environment.

FINISH Mondial

FINISH Mondial is a partnership between WASTE, Amref Flying Doctors (AFD) and Aqua for All (A4A). It has the ambition of making safe sanitation and improved health a reality for all by 2030. Building on the shared successful experiences started by WASTE Foundation with FINISH in India (2009) and FINISH in Kenya (FINK, 2013). One of the main result areas of FINISH Mondial is to scale-up sanitation financing in partnership with Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) and consequently improve access to safe sanitation for all. In India, FINISH works with several small and medium scale MFIs across the country. These partners are supported with demand generation trainings, knowledge on safe sanitation technologies, addressing other related needs in sanitation financing such as retrofitting of toilets and upgradation.

FINISH Mondial follows an ecosystem-based approach working through the diamond model of WASTE. FINISH Mondial uses a multi-stakeholder approach to involve the entire value chain in
sanitation. By (1) raising awareness on and creating a demand for sanitation amongst end-users; (2) mobilizing the supply and reuse business of sanitation (3) integrating local financial resources and (4) Collaboration with government and development partners allows for scaling. As a result, FINISH Mondial improves quality and safety of sanitation services, reduces the price of these services and ensures proper disposal of the waste produced. FINISH Mondial emphasizes each of the four Diamond domains equally in developing local sanitation markets for inclusive scale in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda
